K. k. Sunny Beach is the largest sea resort on Bulgaria Black Sea coast. Cuddled in a beautiful bay that in its southern part abuts the town of Nessebar – a unique monument of Bulgarian heritage, the resort reaches the southern slopes of Stara planina / Old mountain / to the north. This extraordinary marriage of the sea and mountain generates an excellent climate favouring travel and tourism during the greatest part of the year.
Founded in 1959, the resort was judiciously located only 35 km away from Bulgaria`s largest industrial and tourist center – Burgas – and 30 km away from Burgas Airport, the country`s most modern Airport.
The flat landscape of Sunny Beach differs considerably from that of the rest of the large Black Sea resorts. The sandy sea bottom slopes gently, hiding no unexpected depths. The beach strip is 5 500 m long and 40-50 m wide on the average, and consists of fine, homogeneous sand. Its western part a total surface of 86 hectares of dunes, is a national reserve.
The average monthly air temperatures during the tourist season does not exceed 25-26 C and the average monthly humidity varies between 60 and 65 per cent. The period from June through September is characterized by a minimum of cloudiness / 3-4 days monthly / and a maximum of sunshine / 20-25 days monthly/. The climate makes Sunny Beach a truly excellent place for travel and tourism, the duration of the tourist season being 6 months.
The first luxury hotel in the resort was the Globus hotel, built in 1962. Russalka / The Mermaid / was the first bar, and the entertainment facilities Chuchura / The Source / and Ribarska hija / Fisherman`s Hut / came soon after.
Today, there are more than 200 hotels in the resort`s area, 80 per cent of them being four and five-stars hotels and 60 entertainment facilities, between them is one of the biggest Water park on the Bolkan Peninsula – Aqua Park. The overall accommodation capacity is about 180 / 200 000 beds. The hotels offer every opportunity for a full rest – indoor and outdoor swimming pools , green parks and gardens, sports facilities, restaurants, day and night bars, entertainment facilities, beauty parlours etc.
Sport fans can find in Sunny Beach tennis courts, basketball and volleyball playgrounds, a mini-golf field, opportunities for cycling, rowing, yachting, scooting, water-ski, water-cycling, water-parachuting etc. A horse riding base was also created with perfectly break in horses and very well prepared riding instructors. Land, sea and air trips are organized along exciting tourist routes and different monuments of Bulgarian culture.
Bulgarian –style restaurants bring back to life unique Bulgarian traditions and offer national , European and Asian cuisine. Modern night clubs and discos create the musical magic of the nights at Sunny Beach. Special children –oriented attractions makes of the resort a vacation paradise for its youngest guests.
The resort offers opportunities for congress tourism as well. Nearly all four and five star hotels can be used on a round-the year basis as congress venues owing to the availability of conference rooms suitable for seminars, workshops, congresses etc.
Sunny Beach has won the prestigious international Blue Flag Award for its beautiful landscape, mild climate, crystal waters and fine sand beaches.
К. к. Sunny Beach became a major factor in the international tourist marketplace. Each year thousands of tourists from Great Britain, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, the Scandinavian and other countries come to visit it. Nessebar, one of the most ancient towns in Europe is situated on a rocky peninsula in close proximity to Sunny beach. It is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The town has a century-old history and it has preserved architectural monuments from all periods – the remains of the Roman and Medieval walls, the Byzantine and Bulgarian churches and old houses from 18th and 19th cc. The town was enlisted as a World Cultural Heritage Monument and is included in the list of the UNESCO cultural and historical heritage.
The representative professional organization working to make the resort`s new image is the Union of hoteliers – Sunny Beach, founded in 1998 as a non-profit association. It includes almost all owners of hotels and restaurants in the resort. Its major objective is to defend the owners` interests and promote the tourist industry, the hotel business, tourism development and trade in Sunny Beach.
